Poster Analysis – Friday The 13th

The next and final poster that I will be analysing is the 2009 re-make of Friday The 13th.

This film poster follows all of the stereotypes that are used when creating a poster for a film of the horror genre

The first thing that I notice about the poster is the typography of the title. The title of the film is all in bold CAPITAL LETTERS and this is good because it will instantly get the attention of the audience. This makes it look as if it is being screamed/shouted at someone to try and get their attention also. The screaming/shouting is a typical convention that is used in horror films and in particular when trying escape the clutches of a killer. not only this but the title is, like all horror posters, in the colour red and this is the most common thing used because of what it signifies and connotes to the audience which is danger/anger and death.

Because of it also saying its made by the same producers as “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” it will interest the reader an will then make them believe that they will be seeing the same level of gore and violence.

img1

The weapon that is being shown is clearly a machete and this is very clear image and understanding of what the audience is gong to expect from this film. The machete is a clear sign that there is going to be a lot of violence and it is definitely going to be a bloodthirsty killing movie. Also the fact that the blade is in the dark and covered in blood  it just increasing the intensity and the gruesomeness of this possible notorious killer. It could be because of the background in which it is set, which is a dark and a very isolated area an where help would be near impossible.

Img2

The whole poster is shot with a low angle shot. As a whole this makes the character seem even more superior and an even greater danger to his victims. Overall his gives a sense of just how serious this person is towards the audience. Furthermore the use of the angle shows that he has the ultimate power and that she is more powerful and that his victims are very vulnerable when you visit crystal lake.

friday the 13th

The “hockey” mask that is covering his face is a vital and very significant prop as well that has been use very effectively. Because the mask is covering his face the audience, the denotation of this is that they can’t see what/how is feeling and this gives the impression that he has no remorse or doesn’t feel guilty for what he has been doing to his victims. It also stops us from seeing his emotions about what he has been doing in the forest with a machete. The lighting has played a massive role in this poster and this is because there is a small glimpse of it shining onto the side of his face. This shows that he means business and that he wants the audience to be focused on his face and not the fact that he is holding a blood stained machete in the middle of the forest.

img3

And the final part of this film is the tagline at the top of the poster. “WELCOME TO CRYSTAL LAKE” is almost acting like an invitation for the audience and enticing them tot come and see the film and it also tells us the setting of the film. However we would normally associate the word “Crystal” with either the wealth, jewels/diamonds or if we where to associate it with a lake then this would be “crystal” clear but because he has the blood stained machete it gives the impression that the lake will definitely not be crystal clear at all.

POSTER FINDINGS:

From the findings and the analysis that I have undergone we have com to the conclusion that the idea of the forest like background within the poster will be the best option for us to do. This is because it can really set the scene for the plot of the film but also the idea of a secluded, isolated area gives the idea that help is going to be hard to come by and the victims will not be able to escape the first easily.

Poster Analysis – Sinister

The next movie poster that I will be blogging about is Sinister.

I believe that this poster follows the typical conventions of a horror movie and here is why I believe this:

To begin with there is an image of what appears to be is the monster/culprit in this film. The image seems to be drawn in blood which, like most horror films, has connotation an links with blood, anger, danger, violence and even death. As a whole this would indicate and set the scene for the rest of the movie that the fact that it will be something to do with a person or monster who is bloodthirsty and lots of people are going to get effected.

There is a tagline which reads simply “Once you see him, nothing can save you” this can be very effective because it could suggest that the thing behind this film is still at large or that it isn’t only a fictional character but that it could be based on a true story and still alive. It could also be linked to the fact there is an unravelled tape on the floor which could be an indication that once you watch the tape, you will be a part of the devil. Furthermore the background of the poster is a wall which is starting to crack and shows a darkness about this as well. The use of all of these together gives a spooky and abandoned impression.

Another key part of this poster is of the little girl who is smearing the blood across the wall as she is walking past. She is in her pyjamas and her face is covered. This could only assume that she is either a regular but very vulnerable character or that she is being possessed by the evil character that is the main basis of this film. The blood that is being smeared by the girl reveals the face of the devil that is possibly possessing this girl.

The title of the movie is in the centre of the page, it is in black and has drips coming down. This makes the text appear as if it were written in blood, emphasising how many horrific deaths are contained in this film. The image of the poster makes the film seem very gruesome and really scary because in most horror films, children and the devil is a typical use of iconography for this genre of film.

A final thing that makes this poster very effective towards the audience is the fact that it says from the producers of Paranormal Activity and Insidious. This is a good technique for the audience because it lets them know that they can expect the same sort of horror and fright that is associated with these two films. Furthermore the fact that it will be the first thing that the audience will read when they see this poster, its a good way to intrigue an attract the customers into watching this film that is sure to give them a  big fright and will terrify them.

Poster Analysis – Evil Dead

The next film poster that I will be analysing is for the film evil dead.

This film poster, I believe, follows the common conventions of a typical horror traile. This is because the main colour of the whole poster is red. This is very effective because it gives the audience a sense of the  danger and terror that could be inflicted with this movie. The excessive use of the red gives the impression to the audience that gore and blood is going to be the main focus of this film.  The girl also the audience the sense that she is the main character for the film.

The tagline is very significant as well. “THE MOST TERRIFYING FILM YOU WILL EVER EXPERIENCE” and this is a good way to get the message across that it will not be like any other horror film that the audience will ever see. Furthermore this poster also says that the prodcuers are from the original producers that did the classic.  From this the audience can expect the same sort of horro and terro that they did from the original film of Evil Dead. Most of the conventions used in this film are the same that are used in most horror poster which gets to the audience and shows them the full terror that can came from that particular film.

As a whole this film poster really sets the scene for the rest of the film amd from this the viewers know what to expect when they see this film, which will consist of jumpy moments and the main character, which is the little girl

Another convention about this poster is the fact that the girl iswalking away and looks like she has already been killed by the way that she is standing and the stance that she has taken.

Poster Analysis – Dead Silence

The next poster that I will be analysing is for the film Dead Silence. The thing that is significant about this poster is the use of the doll as the main picture for the poster. The decaying hand in the foreground of the poster gives the impression of what the story is going to be like, of the undead, which is a common convention for most horror films. However the doll gives a sense of innocence because you wouldn’t normally associate childs dolls with anger, possible death or even horror.

Not only this but the way in which the title of the film is shown (Dead Silence) looks as if it shouldnt be there or as if it is dying and slowly fading away. This is also backed up with the colour of the background. A black background is a common convention because it gives a sense of the unknown which can easily build tension and suspense compared to something that is actually visible in the background.

The tagline is another specific part of the film as well. This is because it reads “YOU SCREAM. YOU DIE” which is actually a good tagline to use for this genre of film. When watching this film people are bound to scream and this could give the audience terror because they might feel that if they as much scream a little bit then they will be the next victim…..  This is also backed up with the image a the hand over the dolls face and telling the audience to “Shhhh”

I feel that this film poster follows the convention of a horror film. The reason as to why I believe this is because it is just a simple still photograph of what appears to be the perpetrator and the use of the black background gives the sense of the unknown and this is a very effective film poster. I feel that this film poster is quite close to the same effect as the film Chucky because that’s included a doll who was terrifying its victims.

Poster Analysis – Paranormal Activity 3

For this post I am going to be uploading a picture of the poster from Paranormal Activity 3. The poster itself has just an image of two children asleep at night. This is showing that they are extremely vulnerable because they are only young and powerless against the “thing” that is in the house. Not only this but they have used a low angle shot to also show the vulnerability of the two children.

The poster itself has been made using a static effect and looks as if it has been taken with a home video camera and this also challenges the use of normal horror films. This is because there aren’t any blood and gore that you would normally be associated with a horror film. All you see is the outline/shadow of the antagonist and all of the things taking place are sudden and appear out of nowhere. I believe that this is why the audience get the all of a sudden jump and this is what make the trailer good and very effective.  The film as a whole was very challenging because not only, as I said earlier, the blood and gore isn’t apart of the film and the main basis of the film is a psychological effect and something that they will keep in their minds for the rest of the their lives. The poster however isn’t as good as I thought that it would be is because all you see is the outline of the antagonist and it doesn’t really give the impression of what the film is actually about if you hadn’t seen any of the previous films before.

Paranormal Activity 3

The thing that is significany about the words “Paranormal Activity” being in the red color which is a good connotation for blood, gore, danger and agression. The word paranormal means ” designates experiences that lie outside “the range of normal experience or scientific explanation” or that indicates phenomena understood to be outside of science’s current ability to explain or measure.”

Trailer Analysis – The Last Exorcism

The first thing that is clear and will draw the audience into the film is the fact that its the same producers as Dawn of the Dead. This is to let the audience know that they can expect the same sort of horror, even though it’s a completely differently film, and that they should be prepared for what is going to be revealed when the film is released. This will be also let the audience know that the effects and the style of horror is going to be very similar to Dawn of the Dead.
TLE1

An establishing shot is used at the beginning of the trailer and this seems to be a convention used in most horror films. However in this trailer the common convention used is that the establishing shot is displaying a house/cabin which is secluded and isolated from any close help. Furthermore it is also in the middle of the field and makes any attempt to escape “The Devil” imminent and virtually impossible. Establishing shots are very effective and a good camera angle at the beginning of a film/trailer because just from this one shot you could tell if help is going to minimal/impossible because of it being in a secluded area or if it is going effect more than one victim because of it being set in urban area.
Establishing Shot TLE

The audience is told that this exorcism will be this man’s last one that he performs. This connotes to the audience that this victim is going to be very specific and not like the other 46 that he has performed in the past.

All throughout the film they use quick jump cuts between each clip followed with a static look, as if the film has been lost or damaged. This would have been used to get the suspense up and make the audience off edge and in an uncomfortable position. They also have the main character of the film showing her “other side” which of course is the devil. Followed by this everything you see is in a red effect because this colour commonly connotes anger, dangerous occasions, blood and specifically the evil itself. They give the character dark and black eyes which, like the quick jumps, builds up the suspense gets the audience ready for the next sequence.

TLE2

After this shot, we see the man performing the exorcism looking for the girl who he is trying to help. Using a medium shot and then zooming into a close up we can see that the women is terrified through the expression and look on her face. It also shows that because of this thing that is inside her she doesn’t know where she is and that this” thing” has taken over and is controlling her body. The tension and build up is used through hard jump cuts and sound, like thunderclaps, every time we see her. This has the tendency of making the audience/viewers uncomfortable and on ease about the situation that the exorcist and the victim has found themselves in. This use of hard jump cuts and “cut the air tension” is a very common convention used in a lot of horror films.

Another common camera angle/convention used, is both the high and low angle shots. The high angle shots have been particularly used well on the victim and the girl that being exorcised. This is very good because connotes the low sense of power that she has and the way that she has been effected has completely destroyed her and made her extremely vulnerable. And on the other hand the vicar is the person that has the low angle shot used on him. this gives the audience a sense of how powerful he his and how he can help the victim and get this evil spirit out of her and get her back to way that she was originally.

This next scene is good way of displaying the character and the way that she is. Starting from an extreme long shot, all we see of the girl is her outline and her head looking down and, in a way, being secluded from everyone around. The black nature of the scene gives the sense of an eerie environment and that something is going to happen sooner rather than later. The way that she has been presented and the look of the scene is something that, I feel, works very well and is goo for the type of scene and film they have done. The camera angles and the props used work very well and I feel that this is something that I might take into consideration when planning the trailer that I am going to do for my own project. This use of camera angle is very popular with film directors because it allows the audience to see the horror but not get a full glimpse, in this case, of the girl . As a result it makes the audience feel uncomfortable because to them it just looks like a normal girl in the corridor but in reality it isn’t.

Trailer Analysis – Evil Dead

This trailer starts with the green rating screen displaying specific information. This is a common convention for all trailers because it means that it has been rated safe to view and there nothing that could potentially harm the viewers of this film.

ED1

Trailer opens with an Establishing Shot of the cabin that the majority of the films takes place. This is used to show the people who have seen the original Evil Dead Trilogy. Furthermore the fact that it is basically in the middle of nowhere and extremely isolated from any other civilisation, help can thrown out the window straight away. Also because the length of the shot is significantly long it implies and shows to the audience that the cabin holds danger and you can see the suspense building up.

ED2

The first real glimpse of the type of horror film that this is going to be is when the man slowly, but surely opens the bedroom door and we are displayed with a very isolated and frightened women in the form of a long shot. When she says “Please you have to get me out of here” she says it in a very slow and basic form to get the message across and something terrible or horrific is happening. They use a close up so that the audience can see the terror and ghostly look on her face as if she can’t cope with the situation of the house. It eve looks as if she has been “scared to death” but not literally.

ED5 ED6

The next scene show to the audience is with the use of a tracking shot and also as if the camera is the perpetrator chasing its next victim. during this time she says “there was something in the woods” in such a quiet and whisper like tone. This would have been done to let the audience know that this “something” is still in the woods. It could also imply because this creature is so evil and supernatural that the victims don’t know what it is or how to deal with the terror that it brings and is always around this secluded and isolated cabin. Also that this evil “thing” is in or around the cabin and could be listening to her every word. This is back up when it cuts to a clip saying “IT WILL CONSUME YOU” suggesting that the evil presence is out to get everybody and kill everyone that is out there or who will stand in the way of it.

ED7 ED8

The next part of trailer which makes the plot of the film even more significant is the fact that a book is found and that it has been wrapped up in black plastic bag and even barbed wire. This implies that this book is not to be touched or opened in anyway because the consequences that could arise because of this happening. However the man in the cabin decides that he is going to open it. Once opened it has “Leave this book alone” written in what I believe to be blood which would be seen as the main prop and sets up the rest of the film but also it would give the impression that the book is significant and linked to the frightened and terrified women that was previously shown. This method allows the viewer to make them feel as though they have made sense of the general idea of the film without them actually knowing any major plot points and that they won’t be ready for what will happen in the forcible future of this film.

This section of the trailer is shown through a series of Jump Cuts that occur very quickly, one after another. This shows the sense of panic that the woman was going through in the woods and the sense of panic that the man is experiencing when looking through the book. Because of the way that the book opens we see the typography that has been used to say the words “LEAVE THIS BOOK ALONE”. This phrase is written in red and what appears to be blood. This connotes that whatever happen to the book prior to it being opened wasn’t a good experience. Furthermore the use of blood is a common and typical convention that is used because it is a piece of iconography that is used in 99% of horror films that are released so frequently. And what is does is that it can connotate and denotate acttons which is clearly a common theme throughout this fil m shown through the trailer and the name of the film as well.

ED Book Screen shot 2013-09-10 at 08.54.06

The trailer uses a lot of those jump cuts that I previously spoke about and there is one significant scene and this is at the midway point of the trailer. The audience finally catches a glimpse of the girl who was on the bed earlier and from this we can see the transformation that she has gone through because of this evil spirit that has found itself with these people/victims. She slowly changes and this is the first time that the viewer sees this girl, her character is not explained in the trailer, but becomes apparent during the film.

ED Girl ED Horror

As a whole this is a very good trailer because it draws the audience into the film and gives them a sense of the plot of the film and helps to prepare them for what the actual film is going to be like when released.

Most of the films that I have been/will be reviewing are going to include the setting of a “cabin in the woods” and this something that is becoming increasingly more obvious and that I will be leaning towards this idea when designing and creating the storyboard for the trailer & poster that I will be creating for this unit/project.
