I would have to say, personally, that this horror website subverts but also follows at the same time and I am going to explain why I think this.
The thing that really stands out for me when looking at this website is the masthead at the top of the page. “The Traps Come Alive” is very significant because it goes along with the title of the film “Final Chapter” because this means that there are going to be a lot possible gruesome scenes within the film and I believe that it infers the plot for rest of the film.
The next feature that I like with this website is the colour scheme. This is because the main colour scheme is white which has the connotation of purity and innocence but this isn’t the case when watching the film because the of the traps and storyline that goes with it as well. The next thing that is significant is the black stains that are shown as well. This colour connotes & represents that it is quite old and that they have effectively been left to die within the traps that have been put in place. Furthermore the black connotes death, mystery and injuries as well. This colour ties in completely with the plot of the film which is all about death and people being manipulated into “playing games”.
The typography of the title for the film is very significant as well. The use of the read is very significant because this connotes blood and danger but not only this the letters S and A look as though they have been written with a blood stained hand/object. Not only this but the W has been represented with an object which appears to be like a pitchfork which is a common symbol associated with the devil himself which in-turn is associated with death, torture, manipulation and terror. The excessive use of the colour red is there for the distinctive relationship between the connotations of red and what the film is about along with the stereotypes that are associated with this film as well.
When going straight onto the website a very good feature is that a box appears displaying the trailer/clips for the film and a taster of what they can expect. I think that this is very effective because it means that the audience can be drawn into the movie and because the clips are there along with a trailer will really draw the audience to what they can expect when seeing the film. Furthermore a lot of people can already infer the details of the film because of how successful the franchise already is. Some other common conventions that are used on this website specifically is the social networking interactions as well. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc is the best way for people who haven’t seen any Saw films before to see what the film is like and could be the difference between people seeing the film and people who don’t. This along with the “embed” an “share” options, this is a great way to advertise the product further and looks like something I might include when constructing the website for this project
To conclude I feel that this website is one of the best that I have seen because use of the colours white (purity, innocence etc), black (death/funeral) an red (danger, anger) is a good mix because I think that this really sets the scene for the film and gives a very obvious but effective way of getting the movie across. Also something that I have yet to analyse is the main image that can be controlled by the use of the mouse. The main imageI would say subverts the main denotations of what a main image should do. This is because there is a main image of the antagonist/villian but I think that it isn’t very clear unlike others. With other images you might see the main villian in his/her famous disguise but you might also see
The image is in relation to the tagline “IN MIND-BLOWING 3D” which is not only a metaphor for the tagline but I think that it is related to the film as well. By this I mean that it is not only the final chapter/film but could be a reference for the type of mind games that he is going t do which will make the audiences and the characters of the film really think about the tasks/riddles that they will both be faced with all throughout the movie.
